Restaurant: The Crooked Billet
Location: Newlands Ln, Stoke Row, Henley-on-Thames, RG9 5PU
I can’t remember the last time we went out for a Roast dinner. This is because we often deliberate between ourselves if it’s worth the money for what we can make ourselves at home and to be honest if it will even be as nice! However The Crooked Billet had been on our radar for a while and their Sunday lunch Menu looked interesting and diverse!
Whilst shopping in IKEA on a Sunday morning, Mum, Aisha and I (Keda) decided that we could do with a nice lunch on the way home. Mum called ahead and the lovely staff told us to come on down. I have to say the three of us really enjoyed the scenic drive through the South-Oxfordshire countryside, down winding roads and through a beautiful bluebell wood.
We pulled up to the pub, pleased to see plenty of outdoor seating (with blankets!). The inside of the pub was Cosy and unspoiled with good vibes and nice tunes playing. We were greeted by a glowing hostess who sat us at a table of our choice in the garden. When I tell you the Sunday menu is huge it’s HUGE.
Mum was starving and said the menu was overwhelming her (haha) so we were quick to decide on their Sunday lunch set menu which is £39 for two courses. Thank you to Aisha who took one for the team and ordered a starter, delicious moules in a creamy white wine sauce. The portion was SO generous, mum said ‘Is that the starter?!’ as the waitress put the dish down. The three of us also appreciated that the lemon came in a mesh cloth to stop the seeds popping out into your food, how cute! And served with a slice of homemade focaccia, these little details made us happy. Just as we were finishing the starter out came our roasts. I chose the lamb, mum had the chicken and for our veggie girl, the nut roast. Each came with a beautiful big homemade Yorkie with spring greens and cauliflower cheese on the side. The food was hot and meat locally sourced and delicious. Which are big winners in our book.
Our one and only complaint, which I don’t think we could even really call it that, was that it was normal brocoli and not tender-stem with the spring greens. Average broccoli is BANNED in the fig and honey household because it’s just crap.
We finished off with two deserts, a memorable Eton mess with rhubarb instead of the usual strawberries, and an unmemorable tropical panna cota. Both lovely but anything with rhubarb is a bit of us.
Thanks for reading through our first ever restaurant review!
Love,
Keda xx
